EPISODE 11

The grand palace doors swung open. King Vishnu of Bharat and Queen Devi stood regally together, dressed in their finest attire. Prince Surya stood beside them, looking every bit the perfect groom-to-be with a warm smile. Behind them, the courtyard was filled with nobles, guards, and servants eagerly awaiting the arrival of Prince Surya's family. However, one person was missing, Princess Maitra, Queen Devi's daughter.

King Vishnu raised his hands, and the people fell silent as he spoke. "Let us welcome with open hearts and royal honor the family of our future son-in-law, Prince Surya of Kalinga!"

Queen Devi added gracefully, "May their arrival bless our daughter's forthcoming wedding celebration."

Trumpets blared outside the gates to announce the arrival of Prince Surya's family. King Vrishabh and Queen Nalini of Kalinga proceeded toward the welcoming party, their majestic elephants and lavish procession turning heads in awe.

King Vishnu bowed his hands together in respect. "Namaste, Maharaj Vrishabh and Queen Nalini. Thank you for honoring our kingdom with your presence."

Queen Devi gestured warmly. "Namaste, dear relatives. Please come forward and accept our humble hospitality."

King Vrishabh returned the bow. "Namaste, King Vishnu and Queen Devi. Your kingdom's prosperity is evident. Thank you for receiving us."

Queen Nalini smiled and added, "Our brother, Maharaj Abhiraj, has also joined us to bless this union."

Abhiraj stepped forward, his eyes gleaming with cunning and his voice smooth. "Namaste, King Vishnu and Queen Devi. May this alliance strengthen our families' power."

"We are grateful for your blessing, Maharaj Abhiraj," King Vishnu replied with a curious gaze. "Please enter and refresh yourselves."

Inside the grand hall, Queen Devi noticed the empty space beside her. "Where is our daughter, Princess Maitra? She should be greeting our honored guests on her engagement day."

King Vrishabh offered polite concern. "Yes, we looked forward to seeing her before the engagement ceremonies begin."

Abhiraj raised an eyebrow slyly. "Indeed, her absence is... intriguing."

Prince Surya cleared his throat nervously. "My future mother-in-law worries unnecessarily. Princess Maitra will join us shortly, I assure you."

Queen Devi looked at Prince Surya with a skeptical gaze. "I hope so, Prince Surya. Her maid, Nadani, said she was dressing for the occasion over an hour ago."

"Perhaps she wants to make a grand entrance on her engagement day?" Prince Surya offered with a forced laugh.

"How thoughtful of her, Prince Surya," Abhiraj said dryly, his eyes gleaming with sarcasm.

Queen Devi spoke firmly. "Enough. I will send Nadani to fetch her immediately."

King Vishnu tried to keep things calm. "Yes, my queen. Let us not delay our guests further."

"We understand," King Vrishabh said with a polite smile. "Please do not trouble yourselves on our account."

Just then, a soft voice echoed from the palace corridor.

Nadani curtsied low. "Your Majesty, Queen Devi... Princess Maitra is ready to join the gathering."

Abhiraj smiled slyly. "How touching, the bride finally deigns to appear. Perhaps she was perfecting her obedience techniques for her future husband?"

Princess Maitra entered gracefully, her elegant silk saree rustling softly as she moved. Her eyes narrowed slightly upon hearing Maharaj Abhiraj's comment.

Her voice was firm yet respectful, though anger burned beneath her calm exterior. "Maharaj Abhiraj, your wisdom is renowned, yet your words suggest otherwise. Obedience is a virtue of the mind, not a surrender of intellect. Do you imply my future husband requires a subject, not a partner?"

The courtyard fell into absolute silence. All eyes fixed on the tense exchange. Prince Surya's face turned slightly pale, while Abhiraj's sly smile faltered.

King Vrishabh cleared his throat, attempting to intervene. "Ah, clever words, Princess..."

Abhiraj narrowed his eyes, his voice low and dangerous. "Cleverness from a woman is unexpected, Princess. It is usually accompanied by a lack of discretion."

Princess Maitra smiled sweetly, her voice laced with sharp sarcasm. "Thank you, Maharaj Abhiraj. Your comment reveals your experience with women must be limited to those lacking intellect... or the courage to speak their minds."

The entire room erupted into stunned silence. Prince Surya's jaw clenched tightly in tension, King Vrishabh's eyes widened in surprise, and Queen Devi looked proud yet deeply alarmed. King Vishnu raised his eyebrows in quiet admiration.

Abhiraj's face reddened with anger, his tone dropping to a dark whisper. "You dare..."

Princess Maitra interrupted him calmly, still smiling. "Maharaj Abhiraj, spare your dignity. My words merely reflected the wisdom or lack thereof, behind yours."

The air was electric with tension. Prince Surya took a step forward as if to intervene, looking uncertain. King Vrishabh placed a cautionary hand on Abhiraj's arm to hold him back, while Queen Devi moved closer to her daughter, pride and concern etched on her face. King Vishnu cleared his throat to speak and defuse the situation before things escalated further.

The grand palace hall fell into a heavy, expectant quiet as King Vishnu raised his hand to calm the room. He sought to smooth over the razor-sharp tension left by Princess Maitraโ€™s defiant words.

"Enough," King Vishnu commanded, his tone carrying the weight of his crown. "Let us not allow respect to be shadowed by lively discussion. Shall we proceed with the engagement ceremony?"

Maharaj Abhiraj shot a dark, lingering glare at Princess Maitra, his jaw tightening. "This has not ended," he murmured under his breath.

Seeing the danger in the air, Queen Devi gently grasped Princess Maitraโ€™s arm and guided her away from the gathered royals, leading her into a quiet, secluded alcove of the palace corridor.

"Princess Maitra, your words to Maharaj Abhiraj were bold, but also dangerous," Queen Devi whispered, her face pale with worry. "What possessed you to speak so freely?"

Princess Maitra stood tall, her gaze steady and unyielding. "Mother, I will not be intimidated by men who think women should be seen and not heard. Besides, his insult demanded a response."

Queen Deviโ€™s eyes softened with a mixture of quiet pride and overwhelming fear. She reached out, placing a trembling hand on her daughter's arm. "I am proud of your spirit, เคชเฅเคคเฅเคฐเฅ€ (Putri)... but Prince Surya's family is powerful. We must consider the consequences. Your father and I want you to be safe and happy."

Princess Maitra covered her motherโ€™s hand with her own, her voice dropping to a low, resolute whisper. "I will consider nothing that compromises my self respect, Mother. Maharaj Abhiraj's words were a test to see if I would cower as a future princess of Kalinga Kingdom."

"But my child, you do not know their nature," Queen Devi urged softly, glancing around to ensure they were still alone. "Prince Surya's family will not tolerate defiance lightly. Your father received hints of darkness in their past dealings."

Princess Maitra's eyes narrowed thoughtfully. "Darkness... Mother, I sensed something ominous beneath Prince Surya's charming smile even before Maharaj Abhiraj's insult."

Across the hall, shrouded in the heavy shadows of the carved stone pillars, Maharaj Abhiraj pulled Prince Surya aside.

"Prince Surya, your bride to be, has spirit... but also a death wish," Abhiraj threatened in a cold, venomous tone. "Handle her properly, or I will."

Prince Suryaโ€™s eyes darted around the room in panic before fixing on his uncle. "Uncle, I will ensure she learns obedience," he replied nervously.

Abhirajโ€™s lips curled into a ruthless smile. "See what you do. King Vrishabh and I have invested much in this alliance... and in your future wife's cooperation. Break her spirit, Prince Surya, or we will break yours... and possibly her neck."

Prince Surya swallowed hard, his face draining of color as fear and desperate determination fought inside him.

From across the grand chamber, Princess Maitra leaned against a pillar, watching the interaction closely. She noted how Prince Suryaโ€™s smiles were strained and how his eyes filled with dread whenever he looked at his uncle.

Why is Maharaj Abhiraj holding such power over him? she wondered to herself, her sharp mind piecing together the hidden dynamic.

Meanwhile, in the guest quarters, King Tae-ha stood before a tall glass mirror, refining his regal ensemble. He wore a tailored black jacket adorned with intricate gold threadwork, crisp white trousers, and polished leather boots. He possessed an air of effortless authority, fully prepared to step into the grand hall of the Bharat palace.

As he adjusted his golden cuffs, his eyes drifted toward the writing desk nearby. Resting upon the wood was an old piece of parchment. Curiosity drew him closer. He picked up the delicate page, gazing down at a childhood sketch of a girl with striking features, fierce dark eyes, and an unmistakable look of determination.

"Exactly like Princess Maitra," King Tae-ha breathed quietly, his breath catching in his throat.

Before he could ponder the memory further, a soft knock echoed at his chamber door.

King Tae-ha stood tall and composed in his room. "Enter," he said softly.

General Yu-bin stepped inside, flanked by two elite royal guards. He bowed respectfully to his monarch. "Your Majesty, we are ready to escort you to the ceremony hall. Shall we make your entrance?"

King Tae-ha nodded gently. "Yes, let us proceed. I wish to observe Princess Maitra and Prince Surya's families closely."

"Yes, Your Majesty. Please, after you," General Yu-bin said, moving aside to let King Tae-ha lead the way toward the grand hall.

moments later, the massive doors of the grand hall swung open wide. King Tae-ha walked in with strong, confident strides, flanked by General Yu-bin and his elite guards.

Princess Maitra lifted her gaze from her folded hands, curiosity sparkling in her sharp eyes as she took in King Tae-ha's powerful figure.

Queen Devi smiled warmly and greeted him. "King Tae-ha, what an honor. We did not expect your gracious presence."

King Tae-ha bowed his head slightly, his dark eyes locking onto Princess Maitra across the room. "The honor is mine, Queen Devi."

Queen Devi paused briefly before continuing. "I wished to witness the union of your daughter and Prince Surya."

Prince Surya exchanged a nervous glance with Maharaj Abhiraj, his voice filled with sudden tension. "Welcome, King Tae-ha. This is unexpected." He bowed slightly and added, "I have met you before, but my family has not."

Maharaj Abhiraj fixed his eyes on the royal visitor, asking sharply, "And you are...?"

Prince Surya looked at King Tae-ha with deep curiosity. "I thought you were not interested in my engagement ceremony, yet you came."

Prince Veer stepped forward, bowing politely to bridge the gap. "Allow me to introduce King Tae-ha to your family, Prince Surya. This is King Tae-ha of Goryeo. He is a respected ruler and an old friend of our royal family. He has come to discuss an alliance between Goryeo and Bharat in trade, culture, and defense."

Maharaj Abhiraj asked, his tone heavy with suspicion, "A king from Goryeo... what brings you to our children's engagement ceremony, King Tae-ha?"

Speaking through his official translator, King Tae-ha replied calmly. The official translated his words into เคธเค‚เคธเฅเค•เฅƒเคคเคฎเฅ (Sanskrit) for the royal court: "Aham Bharat-rajyena saha vyaparika-sambandhasya charcham kartum agataแธฅ. Bharat-rajรฑa rajรฑya cha svayam mahyam nimantranam dattam, ataแธฅ maya agantavyam eva asit." (I came to discuss a trade alliance with the Bharat Kingdom, and since the King and Queen invited me themselves, I had to come).

Prince Surya looked at Princess Maitra and then back at King Tae-ha, feeling uneasy. "Your interest in my fiancรฉe's happiness is... unexpected, King Tae-ha."

Princess Maitra watched King Tae-ha closely, her mind working quickly.

King Tae-ha kept his gaze fixed on Princess Maitra as the translator spoke his words into เคธเค‚เคธเฅเค•เฅƒเคคเคฎเฅ (Sanskrit): "Kachhit yataha aham anubhavami yat asmin vivaha-sambandhe Rajkumari Maitrayaแธฅ sukham vastutaแธฅ na vicharitam, Rajkumar Surya." (Perhaps because I feel that Princess Maitra's happiness is not truly considered in this engagement, Prince Surya).

A heavy silence fell over the entire hall.

Maharaj Abhiraj spoke in a low, dangerous voice, "How dare you, King Tae-ha! This is none of your concern."

King Tae-haโ€™s expression turned icy and commanding as his response was translated into เคธเค‚เคธเฅเค•เฅƒเคคเคฎเฅ (Sanskrit): "Aham dharshami yato aham saแธฅ raja asmi yaแธฅ satyam swatantratam cha pujayati, rajanaitika-suvidhayai kritan vivaha-sambandhan na." (I dare because I am a king who values truth and freedom, not arranged marriages born of political convenience).

Prince Surya took an angry step forward. "You overstep, King Tae-ha!"

King Tae-haโ€™s voice cut through the room like steel as the translator rendered it into เคธเค‚เคธเฅเค•เฅƒเคคเคฎเฅ (Sanskrit): "Aham bhavantam eka-padam prishthataแธฅ gantum kathayami, Rajkumar Surya. Mama sahanasheelata amaryadaya saha seemita asti." (I suggest you take a step back, Prince Surya. My patience with insolence is limited).

Prince Surya's eyes widened, and he instantly stopped in his tracks.

Maharaj Abhiraj swallowed hard, his face cautious as he asked, "What gives you the right to speak to our prince like that?"

A faint, cold smile appeared on King Tae-ha's lips as he answered through his translator in เคธเค‚เคธเฅเค•เฅƒเคคเคฎเฅ (Sanskrit): "Mama panchasat-sahasra-kushal-yoddhanam sena, Silk Road vyaparasya mama niyantranam, samipa-rajyaiแธฅ saha mama sambandhaแธฅ cha mahyam etat adhikaramm dadati." (My army of 50,000 skilled warriors, my control of the Silk Road trade, and my alliances with neighboring kingdoms give me that right).

The room went completely quiet as Prince Surya's family exchanged nervous looks.

Prince Surya whispered, "You are bold, King Tae-ha. Or perhaps... reckless."

King Tae-ha locked eyes intensely with Princess Maitra. His translator spoke his final words in เคธเค‚เคธเฅเค•เฅƒเคคเคฎเฅ (Sanskrit): "Aham kevalam saแธฅ raja asmi yaแธฅ yat ichhati tat prapnoti." (I am simply a king who gets what he wants).

Princess Maitraโ€™s heart skipped a beat as their eyes held each other's gaze, an unmistakable spark flying between them.

Noticing the silent moment between them, Prince Suryaโ€™s face darkened with instant jealousy. "What does that mean, King Tae-ha?โ€

King Tae-haโ€™s eyes stayed fixed on Princess Maitra, his voice low and firm as the official translated his words: "It means, Prince Surya, that some treasures are worth claiming at any cost."

Princess Maitraโ€™s cheeks flushed softly. Maharaj Abhiraj took a menacing step forward, enraged. "You dare suggest she is a treasure for YOU?!"

With a faint, calm smile, King Tae-ha replied through his translator: "I merely suggested that Princess Maitra deserves a choice in her own destiny, Maharaj Abhiraj."

Queen Devi stepped in diplomatically. "Enough. Let us not forget the occasion. Prince Surya and Maitra's engagement ceremony awaits."

King Tae-ha bowed slightly to the royal court. "I will respectfully withdraw for now. Congratulations, Prince Surya... for today."

Princess Maitra watched him with a mixture of curiosity and intrigue as he turned to leave.

Watching King Tae-ha depart, Prince Surya turned back to her with a subtle hint of possessiveness. "Shall we proceed, my bride-to-be?"

Princess Maitra nodded slowly, her eyes still lingering on the grand doorway. She took her place beside Prince Surya on the intricately decorated pooja platform, surrounded by their families as the royal priests began chanting sacred verses.

Her hands joined with Prince Surya's, mirrored by their fathers, Maharaj Vrishabh and King Vishnu, clasped together to symbolize the alliance of two great kingdoms. Yet, Princess Maitra's heart felt heavy. Her mind kept wandering back to King Tae-ha, his piercing gaze, chiseled jawline, and captivating smile etching an indelible mark in her memory.

Her gaze drifted past the altar, scanning the sea of faces until she spotted him standing near the back, observing the ceremony with an unreadable expression. For a fleeting moment, their eyes locked across the distance, an undeniable spark flaring between them before she hurriedly looked away, her cheeks warming.

Noticing her distraction, Prince Surya gently squeezed her hand. "My dear, focus on our union."

Princess Maitra forced a soft smile, though the endearment felt suffocating. Her heart was already anchored on the king standing in the shadow of the hall.

"The first part of the prayers is complete," the royal Purohit announced loudly. "Now, let both families stand for the varmala ceremony! Exchange the garlands between the bride and groom."

As the court applauded, Princess Maitra mechanically lifted the garland of orange marigolds and white blossoms, placing it around Prince Surya's neck. He smiled warmly, locking eyes with her before draping his garland over her shoulders. His touch made her skin prickle, her eyes darting straight back to King Tae-ha.

"Now, the ring ceremony will commence," Purohit(Priest) declared, raising his hands.

Queen Devi watched with tear-filled eyes. "This final step will seal their union forever."

Prince Surya took Princess Maitraโ€™s hand. "Princess, your hand..."

Her heart raced as she extended her trembling hand, avoiding Prince Surya's eyes to seek out King Tae-ha's once more, as if silently begging for permission to defy fate.

"I promise to love and cherish you..." Prince Surya murmured, sliding the ring onto her finger.

Princess Maitra's mind whispered a completely different vow, one of escape.

"Now, Princess, place the ring on Prince Surya's finger to finalize this union," instructed the priest.

Hesitating for a long moment, she locked eyes with King Tae-ha before placing the ring on Surya's finger. "It's done..." she whispered softly.

"My wife-to-be..." Prince Surya pulled her into a triumphant embrace.

King Tae-haโ€™s eyes narrowed slightly, his face settling into a mask of controlled emotion. Turning abruptly, he exited the hall.

Princess Maitra watched him walk away, overcome by an inexplicable sense of loss.

Noticing her distress, Queen Devi placed a reassuring hand on her. "Beti, smile... your engagement is official now."

Princess Maitra managed a weak smile, though her heart had already walked out the doors with King Tae-ha.

Prince Surya leaned down, whispering in her ear, "Shall we receive blessings from our parents now, my Princess?โ€

Princess Maitra nodded mechanically, scanning the crowd once more for King Tae-ha, only to confirm his absence.

Together, Princess Maitra and Prince Surya bowed down to seek blessings from their elders.

Queen Devi placed her hands gently on Princess Maitra's head. "May you always be happy, my child..."

Maharaj Vrishabh added his blessing beside her. "And may your marriage be blessed with love and prosperity."

Prince Veer offered a warm, encouraging smile. "Maitra, I hope you always stay safe and happy."

Princess Maitra smiled weakly, turning her head slightly to search the room one last time. Her gaze scanned the dense crowd behind their families, searching for that familiar figure, only for her heart to sink as she realized King Tae-ha was nowhere to be seen.

Noticing her distraction once again, Prince Surya whispered softly in her ear, "My dear, focus on our happy moment."

Princess Maitra forced a smile to her lips, though her mind whispered a single, hollow realization: He's really goneโ€ฆ
